What the Hell is Rhapsody Anyway?

It's funny, I get this question a lot and I'm always suprised by the lack of general public awareness of Rhapsody, what it is and what it can do. So, without further adoo, here is list of statements describing what Rhapsody is, hopefully - one of these will ring your bell:

Rhapsody Is:

  • A digital music streaming service - instead of downloading songs, you select and listen to them over the internet.
  • A music discovery service - Since you pay a flat monthly fee for unlimited listening access to the Rhapsody catalog of music, you can listen to any genre of music, any time you want to see if you like it - at no risk. No more 30 second clips and $.99 for the song. Just listen and love.
  • A music recommendation service - Artists are connected by similar genres, contemporaries, influencers and followers. The pre-programmed genre, artist and decade radio stations expose you to new music for discovery and enjoyment.
  • A music download service - if you want to own the song to burn to a CD or give to someone else, you can download a track for only $.89 or an entire album for $8.99. But, you don't have to if you don't want to.
  • Music software AND a music website - The downloadable software version of Rhapsody is like iTunes from the standpoint that you can import all of the music on your harddrive, create playlists, build your music library, burn CDs and download music (if you really want to own it). The website www.rhapsody.com allows you to login with your same account info as Rhapsody the software and listen to streams of music, listen to playlists, get lyrics to songs and join in the Rhapsody social networking community. You get both with your membership to Rhapsody.
  • A music jukebox in the sky that contains over 3.5 million songs in its' catalog that gives you non-ownership rights to listen to on your PC, through home stereo, via a mac/linux/pc browser or on an MP3 player. You can log-in to your account from virtually any computer and listen to music in Rhapsody.
  • Like getting $3.5 million dollars worth of music (3.5 million songs at $.99 per song) for only $12.99 per month.
  • The musical equivalent of ESPN. You pay a monthly subscription fee to get the Rhapsody music channel and you can listen to whatever you want, whenever you want.

Here is the Wikipedia description of Rhapsody which I like:

Rhapsody is an online music service run by RealNetworks. Launched in December 2001, Rhapsody was the first music service to offer streaming on-demand access to nearly its entire library of digital music. Downloaded files come with restrictions on their use, enforced by Helix, RealNetworks' version of digital rights management.
